Adopting from Ethiopia

Submitted by Miranda on March 25, 2008 – 12:59 pm3 Comments

Many of you who know us know that we’ve had 7 pregnancy losses due to my blood clotting disorder.. the blood thinners and aspirin just aren’t helping us in carrying to term anymore like they did when I had my son. My ob/gyn has suggested getting my tubes tied.. a hard thing to do when you are only 24. I know it’s for the best though. It’s hard on my body and hard on my family when I’m pregnant and everyone is scared for my safety. It’s also really hard on my oldest daughter to deal with the losses. She’s very aware of what’s going on around her now and it breaks her heart every time.

Anyways, we’ve been discussing adoption for a long time. We’ve always known it was something we wanted to do at some point. My husband and I have decided that we really like the idea of adopting from Africa.

I’ve been looking into the cost estimates and asked a friend who has adopted from that area and I think we’re looking at around $30,000.

My husband is getting ready to transition into his new job as a financial advisor so I think it would be best to start the whole process in 1-2 years just so we have some time to pay down some debt and also start saving money to go through the whole process.

I’m not 100% sure yet but I believe we’ll be going through All God’s Children when we get to that point.

I would love to hear some great ideas for fundraisers we could do. I’ve seen a few women that sale on Etsy to help save for adoptions whether for themselves or for someone they know. I love this idea but I’d love to hear some other ideas of things we could do, too!

I will post more about our process when we get to the point where we can finally begin.

I have a friend who is in the process of adopting from Ethiopia. apparently the process is a couple of months and the cost is way less then $30,000. I think it’s around $6,000. Not for sure but could get more info for you if interested.
