Our ear piercing conversations usually go something like this in our home, “Hey, do you want to go get your ears pierced?” My daughter responds with “Only if you buy me a unicorn!” She’s not kidding, she wants a REAL unicorn. It’s basically her way of telling me “when pigs fly!” But I patiently ask at least once a month and then leave it alone. I figure it’s really my own fault for not getting it done when she was just a baby. I just couldn’t bring myself to put my sweet little baby through the pain so I decided to wait until she was old enough to make that decision for herself.
I don’t remember seeing any pigs flying around (or unicorns for that matter) but Sunday Miss Smarty Pants decided she wanted to get her ears pierced. We jumped at our chance and took her to Claire’s yesterday.
We arrived at Claire’s and the young woman behind the counter had me sign all the papers while Miss Smarty Pants picked out her earrings. She picked the pretty pink flowers being the girly girl that she is and then climbed up into the big chair and clung to a cute black Claire’s teddy bear. She handled it like such a big girl! She didn’t cry at all! She did make a few funny faces but all in all she did great and her ears didn’t hurt her at all afterward either. I expected my husband to have to hold her down after the first ear to be quite honest but she handled it like a little pro.
After we left Claire’s we headed home and she proceeded to stare into the mirror for 20 minutes while saying “I CAN’T BELIEVE I PIERCED MY EARS! THEY’RE SO PRETTY! THEY MAKE ME LOOK OLDER!”
Before going to bed she made me read her the book Earrings by Judith Viorst. If you don’t have this book for your daughter I highly recommend it, it’s SO fun to read about “beautiful earrings, glorious earrings, beautiful, glorious earrings for pierced ears!”
My daughter fell asleep last night saying “I can’t believe I got my ears pierced!” and it was a truly fun experience to share with my daughter.

She is such a doll! Her “o” face is so funny!
Hope that getting out means you are feeling better!?
Good job!!! Man, I went and got mine pierced a second time several years ago, I was like 21 ish and I bawled! i am wimp though!
That is a priceless story, I love the unicorn comment she had said to you! CUTE!! My daughter is 6 and has had her ears pierced TWO TIMES now, as a baby and at age 2. She tore them out when she was a baby so I was reluctant to get them done again but she does well with them now.
Cute…next she’ll be driving your car !
Duh, yeah Mom – earring specialists, you know why we all agree this is a cute story, because we can relate. I actually didn’t venture to Clair’s until I was grown and was amazed that it wasn’t bad at all (at least from an adult), while I don’t wear necklaces or rings – I’m not done until I put on my earrings.
Miss Smarty Pants, just adorable.
I have the opposite problem. My 6 year old has been begging me for years to get her ears pierced and I keep telling her she has to wait. She is such a wild child that I know they will be torn out of her ears the first week she has them put in. I tell her once she calms down a bit-maybe 7 or 8 years old!!

Wow! What a big girl, where does the time go….? I didn’t get Baby Girls ear pierced when she was a baby either, I wanted her to make that decision for herself.
