My School Years Eve Resolutions

Submitted by Miranda on August 24, 2009 – 10:23 am2 Comments

school years eve 2

JuiceBoxJungle has a funny show (see my sidebar) about Losing It that helps you feel better about yourself as a parent and remember to enjoy those crazy times as well as the calm ones. What better time to remind ourselves of this than the beginning of the busy new school year. Cookie Magazine and the PTA are debuting School Year’s Eve this year to celebrate the start of the new school year and education by encouraging party-throwing and resolution making. They’ve asked – and sponsored – me to talk about my own School Year’s Eve resolutions. Here goes…

We will do homework before all other activities when we arrive home. Otherwise we forget and we’re rushing to get homework done the next morning right before school starts.

This school year my van will be clean so the teachers who help get kids out of the cars during the morning drop-offs won’t have to see my disaster area on wheels. Speaking of which this needs to get done TODAY since school starts tomorrow!

We’re going to cut back on television time after school. We’re going to find other ways to entertain ourselves… like reading, games, going for walks or just playing together.

We’re going to be all about organization this year! We’re going to be making lunches the night before so we don’t have to worry about being late to school in the mornings or rushing around to find the right amount of cash for lunch money. Backpacks will also be ready the night before and reading logs will not get lost in the bill pile.

We won’t be late to school this year. I won’t be one of the last parents in the drop-off line with the last few kids that are running for the doors after the bell has rung. Even if this means driving her to school in sweats with a hat on my head and no makeup she won’t be late this year.

I’m going to bake more. I’m going to put more home-baked and healthier items in my daughter’s lunch rather than fruit snacks, packaged foods and crackers. Lunches will be more thought out and more well-balanced.

We’re going to be a hand-washing hand-sanitizing family! Every school year we catch EVERYTHING at least twice and we spend a lot of time in bed not feeling so hot and a lot of time in the doctor’s office as well. We’re going to be as careful as we possibly can to avoid catching every little thing. We’ll also ALL be getting our flu shots and eating more vitamin C rich foods.

I’m going to be more involved in my daughter’s class/school. Whether this means helping with field trips, baking for events, or joining her school’s PTA I want to be involved in what’s going on.

This year I’m going to be one exhausted super mom but I’m looking forward to making these simple changes in our family. I think we all have at least one School Year’s Eve resolution. What do you hope to change this school year? My daughter is really looking forward to going back to school and I’m still shocked that I’m now a mom to a third grader. Are your children excited about going back to school and do you feel prepared for the craziness that will now be your schedule?
