Hearing Test Results

Submitted by Miranda on September 15, 2009 – 2:50 pm14 Comments

As I sit here in the PICU I’m grateful that we’re not here for the same reason most of these other parents are. My heart is breaking for them and their little ones. It’s reminding me that what we’ve just learned really isn’t all that bad. God really has a way of humbling us, doesn’t He? What we’re dealing with is SO very small in comparison.

We just learned that my son has moderate to severe hearing loss. I feel so overwhelmed. We talked about hearing aids, speech therapy, CT scans, costs and payments and so on. I don’t even know where to begin. My thoughts on all of this aren’t very organized right now. But I’m feeling fairly calm. I expected this I suppose so it didn’t really come as a shock to me.

I still have the mom guilt.. like why didn’t I get this all done sooner? We even had to talk about possible genetic testing to make sure that this is something that was related to my high risk pregnancy and the complications at birth or if it’s genetic which means he could pass it on to his children and/or my daughter could pass it on to hers. Strange to feel guilty over something of which you had no control but nevertheless, I do.

I’m just looking forward to my son’s “new ears” and the look on his face when he hears the entire noisy world around him for what may just be the first time in his life. Now we can move forward;  My son will get hearing aids and speech therapy and they say he’ll catch up quickly now. I’m actually excited for him.

AWW my friend, I bet your mind is swirling. I am glad you got some answers, I have really been thinking about you both.

I have a friend with a 3 year old little girl who has the same hearing loss situation. She now has 2 implants and can hear the world around her. She’s singing, making noise and slowly but surely will be learning how to talk. Hang in there, you’re doing the best thing for your little boy, and that’s something you should be proud of!

  • Miranda says:

Thank you Toni and Allison, that means a lot to hear. :)

But now you get to look forward to watching his wonder unfold all over again. Learning must be even more profound when it is accomplished OVER a handicap of any kind. Happy adventuring with your son!

  • Erinn says:

Glad you got the help you needed and can move on. Your son will be happy he has such a caring mother.

  • Thoughts are with you and your family! It’s amazing how children over come challenges when they feel loved.

It’s so amazing to think that you guys have a way to make things better for him. It’s so wonderful that he’ll be able to hear your voice!

Amazing! Our children really are resilient.

  • Thank you for the update…I was praying for you guys all day. I am proud of you for finding the positive and I know that you will help your precious boy deal with this. Take time for you too, when Mama is tired and stressed she isn’t good to anybody. Love ya!!

  • I can totally understand mommy guilt-all moms suffer from it! I am so glad that you got answers though and that your son will get the help he needs. He will be fine–especially since he has an awesome mom like you! Hugs to you both!

  • Leah says:

Hearing aids help so very much. Sending some electronic *hugs* and here’s to a smooth adjustment period!

  • I definitely understand the mommy guilt.

I cannot imagine either when he can hear everything like he is supposed. What an amazing feeling that will be for him!

  • Valerie says:

At least you know now and can deal with it. Honestly, he will be just fine. The technology they have now is amazing. My almost 4yo daughter is very well adjusted with her hearing aids. I am not sure but I think you may want to look into cochlear implants.

To make this a little easier for him – I would show him that hearing aids can be fun. Let him pick out the color of the ear molds, they make some tube riders and other “ear gear”

When going through this please don’t let the docs forget about the FM System – he will need it for story time and sports.

We are in the process of deciding between Phonak and Oticon hearing aids for my 12 week old son. My daughter has both and likes her Oticon’s better. She claims she can hear better with them even though they are programmed the same.

Please, please, please contact me with any questions. If I don’t have an answer I have a whole network of people that I could ask.
