Our Mother Daughter “Sleepover”
My daughter and I decided that it would be a lot of fun to have a “sleepover” in our living room to celebrate her last night and morning of “freedom” before returning school and to early morning wake-ups, rushing around, and back to a life full of reading and tons of homework. I wanted to make this a fun night with tons of time for talking and to just enjoy being together so we started the night off by baking cookies so that she had a special little treat to put into her lunches all week. We decided on Oatmeal Kiss Cookies because they’re fun to make (and we kinda wanted to eat some hershey’s kisses). You can find the recipe for them HERE.

After we finished baking my daughter turned on Netflix and we watched what felt like a billion episodes of iCarly (my daughter’s choosing) while we cut fabric for our craft project and enjoyed eating our delicious cookies still warm from the oven. We used the fabric we cut to make some fluffy flip-flops of our own after finding this fun (and cheap to make) idea on the FamilyFun website.

Not only did this fun night cost me under $12.00 (between flip-flop supplies and cookie ingredients) but we had a blast and it was quality time well-spent with my daughter. I see this being a once a month ritual in our home now, it was too fun not to do again and my daughter really needed that time with me. If you’ve never done something like this with your children I highly suggest trying it out. Set aside your chores and your worries (they’ll still be there the next day) and just enjoy your children. They won’t stay little forever and this is a great opportunity to just have fun and create some amazing memories together.
I recently wrote a guest post on From Dates to Diapers with a lot more ideas on fun and easy ways to spend quality time with your children that you might enjoy reading if you like this idea. It might not be summer anymore and you might be busier than ever with school, activities, and everything in between but make it a point to do things every so often that let your children know that they’re more important than everything else going on in your life.

I love the idea of the sleepover with your daughter…what a great way to make special memories. My daughter is almost 2, so we will have to do a sleepover one day too. The cookies look a little too delicious for me to have just a few!
Without a doubt this is the most intense of all relationships, sparks alternately flying around and threatening to blaze the surroundings and then coming to rest in the intimate warmth of a glowing campfire. Until adolescence, the mother-daughter relationship is one of general warmth and closeness. Sure, there are the occasional blow-ups, but most resolve themselves with heartfelt apologies from both sides, and lots of hugs.
